     Today is Poem In Your Pocket Day: Have you shared your lines of poetry with the one next to you?

     The Bagel   by David Ignatow

I stopped to pick up the bagel
rolling away in the wind,
annoyed with myself
for having dropped it
as if it were a portent.
Faster and faster it rolled,
with me running after it
bent low, gritting my teeth,
and I found myself doubled over
and rolling down the street
head over heels, one complete somersault
after another like a bagel
and strangely happy with myself.

The World Is As You Dream It  - Anonymous, Inuit, 19th century

I think over again my small adventures,
My fears,
Those small ones that seemed so big,
For all the vital things
I had to get and to reach;
And yet there is only one great thing,
The only thing,
To live to see the great day that dawns
And the light that fills the world.

Farley Mowat once claimed he was not a very intellectual man - we beg to differ. He feared the intellect as it was responsible for discord in the world. Never Cry Wolf is a novel worth revisiting.

Flint by Christina Rossetti    aka Ellen Alleyne,

An emerald is as green as grass,
    A ruby red as blood;
A sapphire shines as blue as heaven;
    A flint lies in the mud.

A diamond is a brilliant stone,
    To catch the world's desire;
An opal holds a fiery spark;
       But a flint holds a fire.

From Survival to Thrival   by Sheree Fitch
On the road to everywhere
In the midst of the galaxy
I met a child
With eyes that smiled
Here’s what she said to me:
Yesterday I saw the moon!
But it wasn’t in the sky—
It was in a book,
It sounded round,
And the gold in my eye.
Yesterday I learned to read
To read and understand.
I never knew it possible
To hold the moon in my hands.
Yes, now I know it’s possible
To hold the moon in my hands.
Sheree Fitich is at Heritage Regional April 16. She is a Canadian gal, born in Ontario, and residing in Nova Scotia. Her stories, written for young and adolescents, have a positive message. Sheree feels that a state of OPTIMUM HEALTH AND WELL BEING is called thrival. As she says, though “there is no such word except in my notebooks but I dream of the day there is. I am a poet. I deal in ideals. I want every child to be safe, loved, healthy, and have the chance to shine forth with gifts they were given so they feel their lives have a purpose and they realize their human potential. Again, call it thrival. To dismiss the wish as impossible is to dismiss hope for a better world. The key, and it’s one we all hold, is action. One way to work toward that end is to ensure effective, accessible literacy education for all.”

The Lesson of the Falling Leaves
By Lucille Clifton

The leaves believe
Such letting go is love
Such love is faith
Such faith is grace
Such grace is god.
I agree with the leaves.

The simplicity of Clifton’s poem masks a greater essential question: How does one cope with letting go of the past and embracing new beginnings? The poem’s appeal is a lesson for all.

Visiting author Endre Farkas
DETOURS

I’m on my way to you.
The familiar road diverges
where, before, it had not.

Detours surprise.
The adrenaline takes you
to fear-forgotten roads

with no signs to warn
of closed bridges
or dead-end intersections

whose scarecrow arms offer
neither destinations nor distances
to anywhere familiar.

Curves and curses are solid
as sad bulldozers silent
by the abandoned roadside.

The crunching gravel I take for grinding teeth,
the dust spun, a metaphor for lost
the heat’s mirage for laughter

and I remember
to get there
you take all sorts of roads.

Endre Farkas is a staple on the Montreal poetry scene. He masterfully works words so that the reader feels as he does and appreciates the written word.
Endre is committed to “remembering and promoting the important contribution of Quebec’s English Language poets – past and present – to poetry in Quebec”. He reiterates “that poetry matters when it engages the world locally and globally”.

String Theory by Jennifer Lemming
Against the hubris of the day
a piece of gift-wrapping at a party
floats lazily amid the chaos.  I glimpse
a piece of uneven bliss in a parallel universe
Mylar stars against a cerulean blue sky.

This is a world I would like to visit,
where I would be Mylar and cerulean blue,
I wouldn’t care if I were sill uneven
and just a piece of the larger picture.

Jennifer Lemming: born in Pennsylvania but lived most of her life in Indiana USA.  She won 1st place in The Dancing Poetry Contest 2004 in San Francisco for the poem "Lunatic", published in Tall Grass Anthologies, read at the Chicago Printer's Book Fair and is Co-Editor of the Indianapolis, Indiana literary magazine "Ichabod's Sketchbook".   She is a sentimentalist by nature.
